RE: Support for Spruce Lake Industrial Park Expansion – A Strategic Investment for Saint John’s Sustainable Future
Mayor Donna Noade Reardon and Members of Saint John Common Council,
On behalf of the Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce, representing the voice of businesses and economic stakeholders in our region, I am writing to express my support of the application for the municipal plan amendment and rezoning application to expand the Spruce Lake Industrial Park. This initiative not only aligns with the Chamber’s strategic focus on fostering economic growth but also embodies a forward-thinking vision for Saint John’s industrial future.
Saint John has long carried the reputation of being Canada’s oldest city, but it is time to redefine that narrative by embracing projects that position us as a leader in sustainable industrial growth. The Spruce Lake expansion presents a remarkable opportunity to transform the region into a modern industrial base that integrates cutting-edge technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and environmentally conscious practices.
The customized enhancements proposed for Spruce Lake will play a crucial role in attracting innovative industries that align with global trends in clean energy, data centers, and advanced manufacturing. The strategic positioning of Spruce Lake—close to highway access, significant power generation capacity, and deep-water coastal access—makes it a prime location for industries looking to leverage Saint John’s unique industrial landscape. Moreover, the future-focused development of this park aligns with focusing on advanced infrastructure and sustainable energy solutions. The industrial park is well-positioned to support ongoing efforts in energy transition, smart grid technology, and sustainable industrial practices that are crucial to the Saint John regional economic revitalization.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with existing smart grid projects led by Saint John Energy, such as the Burchill Wind Project, which is projected to supply approximately 15% of the city’s electricity needs. The expansion of Spruce Lake, with its proximity to major power generation facilities, is well-positioned to support industries that prioritize sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, the city’s recent $9.1 million investment through the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) further underscores the need for industrial growth to complement housing development, ensuring that Saint John can accommodate the anticipated influx of workers and their families.
We understand that some residents have concerns about the impact of industrial development. It is essential to acknowledge these specific concerns, and also highlight the extensive environmental assessments that will be conducted at the provincial level, particularly for specified pads depending on the industry. Additionally, measures will be taken to protect groundwater wells and ensure sustainable water management practices are in place as the industrial base grows in Lorneville.
The economic potential of this project extends beyond immediate industrial gains. As Spruce Lake attracts new businesses and investments, we anticipate a ripple effect that will foster further community investment and job creation.
In conclusion, the Spruce Lake Industrial Park expansion is not just an opportunity for growth—it is a necessity for Saint John’s evolution as a regional industrial leader in the emerging sustainable economy. We urge the Council to support this initiative and seize this opportunity to position Saint John as a vibrant, future-ready hub that welcomes strategic investments aligned with our city’s sustainable vision.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Shannon Merrifield
