Letter of Congratulations – Prime Minister Mark Carney

April 29th, 2025

The Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister
Office of the Prime Minister
80 Wellington Street
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2

Dear Mr. Carney,

Congratulations on your recent election win. On behalf of the Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce, I extend our sincere congratulations and offer our support in delivering a stronger, more united and resilient Canada.

Saint John is a city of potential – but also of urgent need. U.S. tariffs have hit our region harder than almost anywhere else in the country, threatening sectors like energy, seafood, and forestry. We must act quickly to protect good jobs, secure our supply chains, and build a future that doesn’t depend on uncertain trade relationships.

Despite many years of advocacy and a proven track record of success, Saint John’s trade potential has yet to fully realized. We are the only port in Atlantic Canada with access to all three Class I railways. With continued investment, we can become a national trade corridor – linking goods, people, and opportunity across this country and beyond. Projects like Simms Corner – the key interchange connecting our port and rail network to the region – are essential to unlocking that growth and securing long-term prosperity.

Your government has spoken publicly about investing in infrastructure that matters. Saint John is ready for that investment. We invite you to visit our city, meet with business and community leaders, and work with us to rebuild a stronger, more independent Canada – starting right here.

Sincerely,

Shannon Merrifield
CEO
