A Message from the CEO

Standing Strong Against U.S. Tariff Threats

Dear Chamber Members and Community Partners,

It is an honour to step into the role of CEO at the Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce. Our business community is the backbone of this region—driving innovation, creating jobs, and shaping our shared future. I am committed to working alongside you to build a resilient, thriving local economy, and with the dedicated team at the Chamber, we will continue to advocate for and support your business needs.

Right now, we face a critical challenge that impacts every business, worker, and household in our region. The recent 30-day pause on U.S. tariffs targeting Canadian exports offers a temporary reprieve, but with the latest comments regarding a proposed 25% tariff on aluminum and steel, the threat remains very real. With 92% of New Brunswick’s exports heading to the U.S., these tariffs could have serious consequences for our economy, businesses, and workforce.

Chamber Action & Advocacy

The Saint John Region Chamber is actively engaged in advocating for our members. We recently met with our counterparts from the Moncton and Fredericton Chambers, as well as other provincial business leaders, to align our efforts against potential tariffs. Additionally, Chamber CEOs across New Brunswick met with Premier Susan Holt last week to discuss the challenges ahead. The premier emphasized the government’s priority is to prevent tariffs, but if they are imposed, the province will focus on supporting businesses and strengthening Buy Canada initiatives.

As part of our continued efforts, Premier Holt and leaders from major New Brunswick exporters—including J.D. Irving Ltd., Cooke Aquaculture, and Mrs. Dunster’s Donuts—will be heading to Washington to engage with U.S. trade officials and advocate for policies that protect our economy.

Staying Informed & Taking Action

We recognize that uncertainty brings challenges, but our region has proven time and again that we are resilient. Now, more than ever, we must support local businesses, invest in Canadian goods and services, and stand united in navigating these challenges. The Chamber will provide weekly Trade Advocacy Updates to keep you informed on our efforts and available resources as we approach the potential March 4 implementation date.
