Saint John Region Chamber Congratulates Incoming MP and Leader, Outlining Key Priorities for Growth in Atlantic Canada

Saint John, New Brunswick – April 29, 2025

The Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce congratulates Wayne Long and John Williamson on their election as the new Members of Parliament for Saint John – Kennebecasis, Saint John – St Croix and Prime Minister Mark Carney on assuming leadership. The Chamber looks forward to discussing and collaborating with federal representatives to address the key challenges and capitalize on the opportunities ahead for our communities.

“We are excited to collaborate with Wayne long, John Williamson and Mark Carney to make the Saint John region a hub for innovation and growth,” said Shannon Merrifield, CEO of the Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce. “Focusing on these priorities, will ensure a resilient and sustainable future for our region.”

The Saint John region is uniquely positioned as a national logistics hub and leader in sustainable trade infrastructure. The Chamber calls for targeted investments to strengthen this infrastructure, including federal funding for Simms Corner. By improving the movement of goods, we will strengthen the supply chain and encourage the development of new markets nationally and globally.

We also request increased funding to prioritize the development of Climate-Smart Trade Infrastructure such as SMR’s, wind energy, enhancing port expansion and increased rail access. These initiatives will contribute to economic growth while aligning with global demands for greener trade solutions which are key to both local prosperity and Canada’s transition to renewable energy.

Strengthening our workforce and training pathways is vital to ensure a skilled workforce. In addition, immigration policy plays a key role in our economy. The Chamber requests renewed collaboration in immigration policies to ensure we are positioned for future growth and continue to support our existing businesses and trained workers.

“Our government will need to keep in mind that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of New Brunswick’s economy, driving job creation, innovation, and local prosperity. Supporting their growth through access to funding, support programing, and cutting red tape will not only empower entrepreneurs but also create ripple effects across communities. By nurturing SMEs, we can build a more dynamic and resilient economic landscape that benefits everyone.” states Merrifield

The Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce is a member-driven organization dedicated to advancing the economic interests of businesses in our region. The Chamber works to foster a vibrant business climate, support entrepreneurship, and advocate for policies that contribute to the success and sustainability of the local economy.
